13/6/17 - 4/7/17, Week 11 - Week 13 Kamal Afiq [0330643] Typography and Hypertextuality Final Project Kinetic Typography Lecture Notes Week 11 We had a talk by a Malaysian graphic designer who had worked in the Netherlands. He showcased to us the previous projects he had undertaken, ranging from collections of posters to company logos. He talked a great deal about collaboration work and how important it is to be both open-minded and ambitious in the world of design. He also talked about how they have different work ethics in a place like the Netherlands, especially of how much more focused they are during work hours. The lecture was an interesting experience because we got to meet an actual graphic designer face-to-face with real past experience. Week 12 We didn't have a theoretical lecture. 30/5/17 - 6/6/17, Week 9 - Week 10 Kamal Afiq [0330643] Typography and Hypertextuality Project 2 Font Design Lecture Notes Week 9 We didn't have a traditional lecture this week. In class we focused our efforts on further developing our fonts; digitization, fixing errors, etc. We reviewed our progress and gave us feedback on the work we had completed so far. Week 10 We were not given a theoretical lecture this week. Instead Mr. Vinod gave us a lecture/demonstration on how to use FontLab Studio. He talked us through how to setup the font parameters; e.g. Ascender and Cap height. He also taught us how to transfer our glyphs from Illustrator to Fontlab, and how to carry out letterspacing and kerning on our font. He also taught us how to generate the font for use. 2/5/17 - 23/5/17, Week 5 - Week 8 Kamal Afiq [0330643] Typography and Hypertextuality Project 1 A Story Book Lecture Notes Lecture 5: The personality of type This week we delved deeper into the small details type designers put into their work. Small differences in the appearance of curves, ligatures, serifs and other parts of letters gives each typeface its own distinct character and personality. Type designers take great care to create letterforms that are both harmonious and expressive. The shape of the counter-form (the negative space of the letterforms) can also distinctly highlight the differences in the shapes of letterforms.
