Week 2 Limited animation planning
Because of a public holiday we weren't able to have class. Mr. Hafiz did leave us however with a task; to start planning out the Limited Animation stop-motion assignment.

Instructions

Limited Animation
Plan out the rough story of a minimum 10-second animation. The actual scenes are to be done analogously.

Work Processes

Limited Animation
I started out by figuring out what kind of story I wanted to create. I thought that an action-packed story would be fun to animate and help me figure out my strengths and weaknesses. I didn't want to make anything too serious, but more light-hearted and fun. I thought a fight between a penguin and a leopard seal would be pretty interesting, and if they fought with modern weapons it would funny as well.

I came up with a couple of character sketches. The characters were kept relatively simple and cartoony so that it would easier to redraw them over-and-over. I paid particular attention to the eyes of the penguin and the mouth of the seal when drawing them out, so that they conveyed convincing emotion.

The character design is greatly inspired by Gunter from Adventure Time.

The seal is normally grinning and baring his teeth, to show how mischievous how is.

Character development. The penguin was made to look small and cute, but at the same time also bad ass and lively. The seal was purposefully made large and menacing, seeing as they are the natural predators of penguins.

With the character designs done, I moved on to the actual story itself. I didn't want to make the animation too long to be painstaking work, but not to short that it wasn't very interesting. The story line is basically as follows:

  • The penguin is walking around, and sees a fish. Hungry, he goes to it expecting a nice meal.
  • The seal pounces on the penguin and knocks him away with his tail.
  • Angered, the penguin charges the seal with a mace. The seal sends him flying with a flipper punch. He celebrates by swallowing the fish.
  • Enraged, the penguin fires a rocket at the seal. The seal dodges and opens up on the penguin with a minigun.
  • The penguin dodges all the bullets and does a mighty fine back flip, knocking out the seal.
  • The seal coughs up the fish and falls to the ground unconscious. The penguin climbs over the seal with fish in hand, victorious.
Below is an illustrated version of the story. Keep in mind however that the story is still quite rough and changes are bound to be made.

18 shots. This is actually kinda long. I might need to trim some of the story.

Unfortunately, after having my first consultation with Mr. Hafiz, I realized I had to rework the whole project.

After realizing that the tasks were suppose to be done together as a pair, me and Amir got together and started discussing the various kinds of animations we could do. I opted for a more modern, childish cartoon with simplistic characters while he was adamant about doing an old Disney-style animation with human characters. We bounced back and forth repeatedly, trying to find out some middle ground. Mr. Hafiz then showed us a video on a video called Aug(De)mented Reality, where an artist uses traditional animation cels and an iPhone to create pretty unique animations.

We thought that this would be a pretty interesting way to do an animation, and then decided to do something based on this. We came up with a story set on the campus, where a giant lizard and goose would battle each other over the lake, ending with one of the creatures being thrown towards the screen. Amir drew up the character sketches while I did the thumbnail/storyboards.

We then rented a DSLR camera from the photo studio and took pictures around the campus. We bought some plastic sheets from a stationary shop and some glass markers, but then we found out that the markers couldn't write properly on the sheets. With little time left to find a solution, we decided to just shoot the pictures without the cels, and just input them digitally later. We would then print out all the frames, take pictures of them and compile them into a final video.

Final Submissions

Feedback

Limited Animation
Mr. Hafiz said the the thumbnails I made were too rough, and lacked composition. Furthermore their chaotic nature makes it hard for him to understand what's going on in the story. He said that I was actually supposed to work with a partner on this project and that I should rework the story.

Reflections

Limited Animation
After having my consultation with Mr. Hafiz, I realized that I hadn't looked properly enough at the module outline to understand what exactly was needed for this assignment. I had to actually work in tandem with a partner, in my case Amir on the project.
