Week 1 Film Language
Mr. Martin went through with us through a short over a short history of film and cameras as well as over a variety of different film techniques, types of shots and cinematography in general. Camera angles and the way the shots are stringed together are an important part of telling a coherent story through film.

In the language of film, the various different types of shots form the vocabulary of this storytelling medium:

  • Extreme Wide Shot (EWS) A broad view of the surroundings of a character. Often used at the beginning as an 'establishing' shot.
  • Wide Shot )WS) A wide shot of important subjects and objects and their immediate surroundings
  • Medium Wide Shot (MWS) Shows characters cut off across the legs or below the knees
  • Medium Shot (MS) I A medium sot showing the subject's gestures and expressions. It could be of a person sitting from the waist up.
  • Medium Shot (MS) II A shot of a person doing an action, including his arms and hands.
  • Medium Close Up (MCU) shows the subject between the waist and shoulders to above thehead
  • Over the Shoulder Shot (O.S) Shows the subject behind the shoulder of another person
  • Close Up Shot (CU) Isolates the most important part of the subject. Often just the head. The top of the head is normally cut off.
  • Extreme Close Up Shot (ECU) An extreme close-up of the face, showing a specific detail like the eyes or mouth.

Wide Shot (WS)

Medium Shot (MS) II
Closeup Shot (CU)

With that, there are also a few basic rules that come into play when filming to get good composition.
  • Camera always follows the motion in the same direction
  • Give the subject enough headroom and nose room
  • Don't disobey the 180* rule
  • Use the rule of thirds
  • Use camera angle to convey mood and atmosphere

Instructions

Camera Shot Practise Exercise
Our exercise was to practice different types of camera shots in the photo studio using our phone cameras. We have to carry out a variety of different Wide-Shots, Medium-Shots and Close-Ups.
