2D Animation

Lecture Notes

Throughout the course, we closely followed the module outline and did a variety of different exercises and projects that further flesh out the world of 2D animation.

Our first project was to create a simple animation, where an object transforms into another in an appealing way.

For the stop motion exercise, we were introduced to the basic and primitive foundation of animation, and that helped us to understand the later subjects to come.

We had an in-depth look at a large variety of animations by various studios and companies and analysed how they made their own worm and animation. Going through the 12 principles of animation was a great way for us to understand the underlying principles and mechanics that made famous animations so appealing, visually and technically.

We did walk-cycle studies to understand how the human body moved and how to animate it. We recorded one another doing exaggerated movements and rotoscoped the animations and applied our own character designs to them.

Later on, we paid a visit to a local petting zoo to study the animals on display there, and to understand how they move and other things like dominant mas and form. We created various turnarounds for various animals there, I personally did one for a raccoon and a meerkat. With references in hand, we created a digital version of the animal turnaround as well as created a walk-cycle from scratch using the references previously collected.

We were thought the basics of lipsyncs, and the basic expressions and mouth poses used to animate talking. We also applied this to our animal references.

We then began work on the final assignment, the animated to music project. Before doing so we went through a variety of different animations and analysed them for reference.

Instructions

Metamorphosis
Transform an object into another in an appealing way.

Limited Animation
Plan out the rough story of a minimum 10-second animation. The actual scenes are to be done analogously.

Walk-cycle
Produce an original walk cycle for a character

Lip-sync
Animate a character talking

Final project: Animated to music
Create an animation to the tune of music for at least 15 seconds

Work Processes & Submission

Metamorphosis
My first draft of the animation was quite rough. It was a penguin transforming into a toy car. Mr. Hafiz had me make the animation more appealing by making the movement more dynamic and having the character bend and stretch more. Follow through and motions were also exaggerated.

Final draft

Limited Animation
Initially the animation was going to be traditional 2D. We changed plans and decided to do an animated where 2D was combined with real-life photographs. I personally wasn't satisfied with the final outcome of the project.

Walk-cycle
The first walk cycle was did was for practice. I recorder a classmate walking, and analysed his walk-cycle and converted it into a rough skeleton, which I then placed my character over.

Final draft

I then applied my learning from this and references we got from the petting zoo trip to create an original walk cycle from scratch.

Lip-Sync
I created a basic speech short using the meerkat character and a sound ripped from a game. The outcome can be seen in the showreel.

Final project: Animated to music
Initially I did a completely different project to to the tune of "Rains of Castamere". However the project proved to long and time-consuming, and interest began to fade in my first draft.

I decided to redo the entire assignment at the last minute using a more pumped up, exciting song that ran for shorter time. The final project involved a lot of hand-drawn animation, and boasted a large amount of metamorphosis and play on transitions. I tried to include as much of what I learnt of the 12 principles as possible. I am quite happy with the final outcome.

Showreel
The showreel below presents a supercut of all the work I've done during the semester, including a short personal project.
