Usability & Mobility Applications I

During class today our objective was to redesign a boarding pass by AirAsia, and had to reorganize the informaton while keeping information architecture in mind.

Our final design decided to use a lot more color to our advantage to highlight points of interest and the most important information on the boarding pass. Different sized text also helped to set up the visual hierarchy of the boarding pass, making it easy for the traveler to see the most important information.

User Experience and Initial Ideation

Usability is essentially the study of how a product works and is used. User Interfaces and User Experience can be derived from this study. User Interface is the front-end interface (buttons, drop-down lists) that the user interacts with while using an app, while the User Experience is the holistic experience that revolves around how the user interacts and connects with the product. User Experience always comes before User Interface. User Experience makes great use of user research and testing in the form of interviews, focus groups and other methods to learn more and make better design for user experiences.

For our first few weeks, Mr. Shamsul had us come up with the idea for our very own apps. He told us to create three apps with completely different topics and genres. Below are my ideas:
  • Stalkagram a parody of Instagram. The app itself is a social media platform whose main objective is to incite humor. It has posts and user profiles, which other users can follow or 'stalk'. Live stories in the form of images with GPS information allows users to see and know at all times where their friends are.
  • Cat.my a online eCommerce platform that revolves around the purchase and selling of felines. The app is also quite humorous but has a more utilitarian nature as well. Users can search for cats of their choice to by, and use filters to look for the particular cat they want (age, breed, color). There is also a page where users can bid on cats live. A map with location tracking shows the general area in which a cat is being sold. The user can purchase a cat by adding it to their cart and proceeding with the checkout through online payment.
  • Meme-book an app that displays a meme from an online database every time you click a button. You can bookmark and save your favorite memes, as well as send it to friends and loved ones. It also comes with a meme-creator that utilizes prebuilt templates and customizable elements to create your very own memes.

For our class assignment, we went over how process flows were done as diagrams. Mr. Shamsul had us create a flow diagram for a student applying for university. Below is my end result:

The entire process of applying for a university on the website.

Further development of Cat App Concept

  • Meow.my
  • Splash welcome page
  • GPS map with location tracking, displays local cat stores and re-sellers in the area
  • Search bar with filter options
    • Options to narrow search using filters; breed, age, color, temperment
  • Rating system, to rate re-sellers
  • Cart checkout system
  • Pay through debit or credit card, receipt and confirmation of purchase page
  • Help page
  • Customer support page
  • Cat trivia and encyclopedia page
