Side Project: Hermes

Image
1/4/17  Client-Work, Ashman Razaruddin Side Project - Concept/3D Work HERMES Holographic Projection Module Introduction In this project, my client is working on a concept for a universal, holographic projector called ' Hermes ' , which is an attachable device connected to the visor of a motorbike helmet. Hermes  projects a HUD (Heads Up Display) onto the rider's visor, displaying GPS information and safety alerts. Figure 1. Opening slide of the Hermes' concept presentation. The goal of this product is to give the rider a distraction-free riding experience, lowering the risk of accidents from having bike riders check their phone for directions. My task is to come up with possible concepts for the product, and create a 3D model which can be used in presentations to showcase Hermes. Specifications Attaches to the upper edge of a bike helmet's visor Main feature is an optical projector that displays a HUD onto the helmet's visor Features fou...

DI&V Introduction

30/3/17 - Week 1 MMD60104, Jeffrey Patrick Digital Imaging and Visualisation Introduction to photoshop Practical 1 In our first class Mr. Jeffrey taught us the basics of photoshop manipulation. Cropping, resizing, copying images from a web browser and other basics were taught. I also found out how to use layer masking to hide parts of a layer through simplistic brush-work. It was more of a tutorial lesson, so there wasn't really anything new I got, but the masking thing is definitely gonna come in useful. Exercise 1: Create a composition on photoshop Our first task was to create a composition on photoshop using a base image and a subject. I used Hacksaw Ridge's  theatrical poster as a base and just slotted Thomas the Train right on top. Figure 1. Yeahh boi. I used layer masking to cut out the unwanted parts of the image, and duplicated the base image to create a cut-out of the soldier. I then used Match Color to correct the overall colour of Thomas the Truck,...

DS1 Communication Presentation Notes

29/3/17 - Week 1 DST60103, Yip Jinchi Design Studies I: Communication Theory Communication presentation notes Our task was to watch a short video on communication and create a presentation on the subject that includes our own personal experiences. The goal of communication is shared meaning. Ensuring the message sent is the same one recieved. There is always a sender ( encodes ), a message and a reciever ( decodes ), a channel ( visuals , auditory , technology ), feedback and an environment ( physical setting, time of day, culture ). External interference from the environment and internal interference from the sender and reciever can also affect the effectivness of communication. Emphasis can profoundly affect the meaning of a message. The channels through which these messages are sent also alter the interpration of said messages. The messsage sent may not be the one recieved. Therefore it is important to know the various factors and elements of communication to ensure a shared...

DS1 Assignment 1 Analysis

29/3/17 - Week 1 DST60103, Yip Jinchi Design Studies I: Communication Theory Assignment 1 Analysis Initial Analysis of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" by Bob Dylan Written and sung by Bob Dylan. Released 1963. An acoustic rock song that's sung quite casually and in a relaxed manner, a big contrast to the song's visceral and intense imagery found within the lyrics. The idea of a coming storm is the centerpiece of the song. " It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall " is repeated at the end of each stanza. It hints to a coming destruction or storm that would destroy everything mankind had built. The theme of war, destruction and social disarray is prevalent throughout the entire song. "Dead oceans", "Black branch with blood", "Guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children" are examples of this. A spiritual and religious tone can also be seen from the type of vocabulary Bob Dylan uses. " Misty mountains...

DS1 Introduction

29/3/17 - Week 1 DST60103, Yip Jinchi Design Studies I: Communication Theory Introduction Lecture 1 Ms Jinchi kicked off the lesson by starting a discussion about the general idea of communication and how the visual arts help us deliver messages and motifs. She then separated us into groups and we were given a line of text to which we were to act out in a game of charades with the whole class. We were however constrained; we weren't allowed to mouth words, write, draw or do anything besides making bodily movements. It demonstrated to us that without access to all these different channels of communication, it would be more difficult and much more time-consuming for us to deliver a concise message to a target audience. She then went over the general module outline and gave us our first assignment. We were given a song, told to analyse it, and come up with a piece of work that delivered the same message as the original song did. The work could be any type of visual medi...

T&H Week 1 - Week 4 Exercises

28/3/17 - 25/4/17, Week 1 - Week 5 Kamal Afiq [0330643] Typography and Hypertextuality Exercises Lecture Notes Lecture 1: Introduction Mr Vinod and Mr. Shamsul started off by asking us what we think typography is. The general consensus was that typography was essentially the art of text, and how text could be made into art and deliver a message. They walked us through the module outline and showed us examples of previous students' portfolios. We would be mainly delving into the world of calligraphy and type. Our first task was to get together into groups and research a particular calligraphic hand. My group chose Gothic textura quadrata. A classical, 13th century Black Letter font developed in Germania, mainly used for inscriptions and stained glass. Lecture 2: Calligraphy For the first 2 hours of the session, we were given a run down over what typography is. Typography is essentially the style and appearance of printer matter. It can be used to deliver me...

I&VN Introduction and Vormator Challenge

Image
27/3/17 - Week 1 GCD60204, Hafiz Zamri Illustration and Visual Narrative Introduction and Vormator Challenge Lecture 1/Tutorial 1 Mr. Hafiz went over the general module outline with us and gave us a brief overview about how the assignments and exercises in the module work. It seems we've got quite a few assignments these next few semesters, ranging from short graphic novels to cinemagraphs and parallax illustrations. Our first exercise was to trace out a variety of shapes using Adobe Illustrator for the 'Vormator' challenge. We were to then use these shapes to create our own monster without scaling any of the shapes disproportionately. I found the tracing part quite easy, a bit of pen work and mirroring and I was done with the basic shapes. Figure 1. I actually found the Wurst to be the hardest, trying to create the shape by hand using the pen tool was too difficult. I got past the problem by creating a simple pen curve to form the spine of the shape, to whic...
